Serialization & the Inspector

Serialization is how Unity saves your component's fields into scenes and prefabs and shows them in the Inspector. It decides what a designer can tune without touching code, what survives entering play mode, and what silently resets to its default. Most "my value keeps disappearing" bugs are serialization rules you have not met yet.
