2D: Sprites & Tilemaps

2D games in Unity are built from sprites, tilemaps, and the 2D physics engine, which are separate systems from their 3D counterparts. A SpriteRenderer draws an image, sorting layers decide what is in front, and Rigidbody2D and Collider2D move and collide in a flat world. Most first projects are 2D, so these basics pay off immediately.
